Is it unreasonable to expect the following flow of conversation when at a checkout?
Me: Hi.
Checkout Assistant: Hello.
[Checkout assistant scans items ...]
Checkout Assistant: That’s £49.96, please.
Me: There you go.
[Insert card, enter PIN, etc]
Checkout Assistant: There’s your receipt, your purchases. Thank you. Bye.
Me: Bye.
Rather than this:
Me: Hi.
Checkout Assistant: …
[Checkout assistant scans items ...]
Checkout Assistant: £49.96.
Me: There you go.
[Insert card, enter PIN, etc]
Checkout Assistant: …
Me: Bye.
I’ve only recently started to get irritated by this sort of impoliteness from people, but having started to read Lynne Truss’ “Talk to the Hand” I’ve come to realise that it’s the sort of service up with which I should not put.
