Swine ‘flu

Jesus. How many stupid people are there in the UK? Did the NHS really need to produce these posters for people to download, print, laminate and stick up. Are you a washer or a walker?
There are still no accurate, even ball-park, predictions about how many people are likely to contract the disease, yet people all over the UK are panicking. They’re idiots.
The only reliable statistic* is that “0.5% of people who get it, and need medical attention will die from it”. Shit – that’s a lot – it’s, like, 1 in 200 people. Fuck!
It’s not a lot. The statistic doesn’t tell you that only 200 people in the UK will be ill enough to need medical treatment.
The BBC doesn’t help, either. The standard of journalism there is getting worse, especially online. Look at the stats on this article – completely inaccurately presented:
‘Better data needed’ on swine flu
From this
Not everyone who is infected with swine flu will become ill enough to report their case to a doctor.
Of the proportion who do, scientists predict that 0.5% of them – one in 200 – could go on to die.
Health Secretary Andy Burnham has said there could be 100,000 new cases of swine flu a day later in the year.
they extrapolate
If that prediction and the Imperial College figures are both correct, that could mean 500 people dying every day.
What? How did they draw that conclusion? That’s assuming that all 100,000 new cases are critical enough to require medical attention!
* Statistic: a random number plucked from thin air by a man-hating lesbian tree hugger.

The BBC article’s content has now been updated, so at least the stats. make slightly more sense.
